Tobacco Enthusiast

Every year people try to quit tobacco products. Out of all the millions who try to stop only ten percent will be successful. Most of them give into their vice before a week has elapsed. Now today I’m going to answer such questions as: What is Nicotine? How does Nicotine work and how it effects your body? Is there any medical use for nicotine? Why is it highly addictive? And how lethal is nicotine? I’m hoping to inform the general public, so they will have second thoughts about buying another pack of cigarettes, snuff, or chewing tobacco. Whatever the users preference may be it’s ultimately bad to the body in the end.

In 1828 an alkaloid called nicotine was extracted from the tobacco plant for the first time. This type of alkaloid can only be found in tobacco, tomato, potato, egg, and green pepper plants. It can also be found in the leaves of coca plants.  They are all part of the Nightshade family of plants.  Nicotine name comes from Nicotiana Tabacum(Tobacco Plant). Nicotiana Tabacum is named after the 16th century French Ambassador Jean Nicot, who promoted the plants medicinal use . Nicotine is an organic compound made of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon .

Nicotine works on the skin, lungs, and mucous membranes. They can absorb nicotine quickly once contact is made. Nicotine will find its way right into your blood vessels with ease. It then moves to your brain. Users may feel the effects with fifteen seconds after using it . Nicotine causes an increase in activity in the brains Nicotinic Acetylcholine receptors. This activity creates a flow of adrenaline. Adrenaline delivers a stimulating effect. Which increases activity, alertness, and memory. It also increases heart rate and blood pressure and reduces appetites.  Nicotine increases levels of dopamine in the brain. An increase in dopamine levels gives the user a sense of gratification. Which leads to addiction .

Nicotine also makes burn more calories even when you are sitting down . Low doses of nicotine has shown to act like a stimulant, but taken in large amounts it will act like a depressant. Nicotine itself does not cause cancer. Nicotine disrupts apoptosis. Apoptosis is the bodies’ way of cleansing itself of unwanted, mutilated, or unwanted cells that could become cancerous .

Nicotine is actually finding its way to the medical field. New studies show that nicotine can aid someone suffering from Autosomal Dominant Frontal Lobe Epilepsy. Nicotine has shown to improve or relieve the symptoms of Moderate Ulcerative Colitus. Nicotine helps the neurons lost to Alzheimers by improving them or slowing the degenerative ones down. Nicotine has shown to reduce the tics of an individual with Tourette’s syndrome .  It also is used to self medicate people suffering from schizophrenia.

Nicotine is physically and psychologically addictive . Nicotine addiction can be compared to heroin or cocaine. It is so addicting people who know it is bad for them will continue to use it and need it. Nicotine stimulates the neural circuitry in the brain making you feel a wonderful sensation; therefore you’ll want to do it again . Symptoms of physical withdrawal include irritability, headaches, anxiety, depression and others such as disruption in thinking and sleeping. Nicotine withdrawals last about a month.

Nicotine is lethal if taken in large amounts. Forty to sixty milligrams of nicotine can kill an adult human being . That’s like swallowing 4-5 cigarettes . It is more lethal then most alkaloids. It’s even more lethal then cocaine. The lethal dose of cocaine is one thousand milligrams . Commercially nicotine is sold as a pesticide because it is a potent nerve poison. Signs of nicotine poisoning is vomiting, nausea, headaches, difficulty breathing, stomach pains, and seizures . If you or anyone you know is experiencing this get them to an emergency room right away.

Now that I have shown the facts I hope people will learn to stay away from Nicotine. If they do decide to stick to their habit at least they have learned something from this.   If they want to make their body a breeding ground for cancer, I can’t say anything else. I’ve laid it out right in front of them for all to see. Now before you pick up your lighter to light your cigarette remember what you have read. Do you really enjoy it that much
