So I revisited Piazza. First time since the departure of Kelli O'Hara. The show is still touching and affecting and a beautiful experience. Vicki is beyond perfection. Aaron is finding his place and the rest are still offering brilliant work onstage at the Beaumont. And now, Katie Clarke... She is gorgeous, with looks to turn heads. She acts well, but there is something about her in that particular role that just didn't gel for me. She had lovely moments during "The Beauty Is" and opening scenes, but I missed the earnesty and honesty of Kelli as Clara. With Kelli, I felt the need. I could see it in her performance and she had my sympathies and my heart. She also sang the role with brilliant conviction and stunning voice. Katie sings nicely, but her voice lacks the classical authority of Kelli's. Her soprano is on the nasal side, and she thins out on the upper register. Aaron overpowered her during "Say it Somehow" without even trying. She needs to find herself in the part, she is convincing, but she is not nearly as brilliant as she should be. Hopefully the role will grow on her... or Kelli O'Hara will come back where she belongs.

I've also added more DVDs to the mix: Family Guy, vol. 2, A Man for All Seasons, Coming Home, The Best Years of Our Lives, Ducktales, vol 1., Dead Poets Society, the special edition, Secrets & Lies and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. And I almost forgot, the 60th anniversary DVD of State Fair came in the mail before last weekend. Smiles of a Summer Night should be arriving soon. When it does, my grand total shall be 272.

I was watching TV tonight. I love the American Idol auditions because I find bad singing highly entertaining (hence why I enjoy Florence Foster Jenkins). Good way to blow 2 hours. Then a repeat of a great SVU episode revolving around Olivia Benson and her race against the clock to locate a child. Leno was on at 11:30 and after a weak and predictable joke about Detroit, I switched to Letterman, to discover that Emma Thompson was to be the guest. It was a riotous segment, with Thompson warm and witty and deadpan. She was talking about dealing with her six year old daughter, having a breakdown "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DISCIPLINE YOU!!" falling to the floor. Her daughter walks up to her, looks her in the eye very seriously and says "We should play cards." The next step was to teach her how to make cocktails. "This is the shaker. This is the glass. This is the vod-ka." Then they discussed Nanny McPhee, her new movie and working with Angela Lanbury in her first movie in years. Then came the pie throwing. And it was a good time. I haven't laughed that hard since I saw Sue Johannsen on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

Anyway, nothing new to report. Life continues status quo. Singing for Annette approaches soon, our first rehearsal is this Sunday. It will be lots of fun to work with her again.
