Getting the Wood -- the Harder Way

We were getting perilously close to running out of firewood, and running out of options to get more.

From what I've heard, if you were to order an entire truckload, they will send a truck with the forklift attached to the back. You have to ask for it, of course. Storing pressed wood outside is asking for trouble though. Perhaps getting one of those light steel shed like structures that has a roof and three walls. Sometimes called cattle shelters.

Inasmuch as Big R stores those pallets (and also pallets of wood pellets) outdoors, I'm less concerned about that than you might think. The pallets are double-wrapped in plastic, and we'd probably buy heavy-duty tarps to go over that.

I have considered contacting the vendor directly and finding out what a full truckload is and what it would take to get it delivered, as you suggest.

I did write to the manufacturer, and now I understand why it's been such a challenge. Their log-making machine, what presses the sawdust into logs, is broken. They've been having to juggle inventory and people aren't getting everything they ordered. I hope they get it fixed by next season.

A full truckload would be 24 pallets, which is a bit much, and they don't have their own unloading equipment; they bring the trucks to retailers, who have to use their own forklifts to unload the product. Also, they only sell to retailers and distributors and wouldn't sell me a truckload even if I did have a forklift lined up to unload it and was able to commit to buying four years' worth of wood all at once.
