you and i

we meet this evening by accident, you and i.

shoulders bump as we brush past each other. heads turn, gazes connect.

liquid chocolate meets with burnished caramel; an exchange of a hundred conversations, a thousand words.

breaths mushroom out in wisps of white; lips, dry and chapped from the cold weather, curl upwards in the beginnings of a smile.

he raises his hand in greeting. he is smiling but the expression on his face is unreadable. happiness, regret, sadness?

she inclines her head slightly, wordlessly. a reply to his greeting, an apology, an acknowledgement?

a million different thoughts flash through minds, weighing down hearts and tongues.

what to say, what to do, what is appropriate, and what is not?

an ache to reach out and entangle fingers together, linking hearts and people. yet, hand remains by side; thoughts are nothing but a fantasy.

goodbye.

hearts longing yet minds reluctant, we go our separate ways that evening, you and i.
