One more class down - 1 thesis and 4 courses to go! My summer course finished last Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed I may just be getting an A+. Though I have a feeling I royally screwed up the coding on my second last assignment. If I did, and depending on how much I get marked down for not being rigorous (my web page still worked beautifully!), there is an A or an A- in my future. Neither of which are too shabby, but the A+ would help to counteract the stupid B+ I got last term. I was given the highest mark possible that would not put me in the A range! It was just high enough to be super annoying but not low enough to complain or challenge the mark.
This week Dave is in Quebec City at his first academic conference. He is giving a paper (well gave it this morning really). He is presenting the argument from the first chapter of his MA thesis. It has been tightened up to meet the time restraint and to be more appropriate for oral presentation. He was very positive about it last night when I spoke to him.
Dave has been meeting lots of other people in his field and making lots of good connections. Every time he mentions someone I ask what university they are at and then give him my opinions on the city. ;-) Location can be very important when scouting potential PhD thesis advisers. Chicago, Toronto, along various California and European destinations have been mentioned.
Chicago and Toronto stand out in my mind because both have Near Eastern programmes. Chicago has the very cool
Oriental Institute (which you should check out online!). As for UofT, they have
Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations and the
Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology. So maybe I could take some classes or even just volunteer at the Oriental Institute. Hmmm, maybe they are looking for another librarian? Who knows.
