Discipline is NOT the same as punishment and there's no way around that, so don't kid yourself into thinking you're disciplining your children when you spank them.
If you try to teach your kids that hitting is wrong and you think that being consistent is important, then hitting your kids won't work because it's not consistent with your lesson that hitting is wrong. Kids pick up on that inconsistency and will lose trust in you.
