My dad was more than a little bit of a nutbar, so I come by it honestly. He was a new-age, born-again Christian, who was obsessed with UFOs. Also Earlier electronics were solid state, and much more robust against these kind of effects. unfortunately almost everything now is very susceptible. though there is a easy fix. Turn it off and disconnect it from its power supply. unfortunately you need to know its happening, and you have 7 minutes from detection to "impact".
then there's always the Quebec black out in '89. that was a small one. And they know about it. the early warning satellite built to keep an eye on this only went up in '06 (mostly because of the Quebec black out, though a ground observation station was constructed in '95)
Solar flares don't just "knock out" power for a little bit. Things actually blow up and or become so permanently damaged they need to be replaced. things like 12 million dollar step up transformers. (New Jersy same '89 storm) not something you usually just have a spare laying around...
A big flare, sure... maybe North America gets a warning, small black out, minor damage... how about the rest of the world? how do developing country's pay for the cost of their entire electrical system? the Quebec storm cost 10 million dollars to fix.
the same storm cycle also knocked out the TSE in Aug.
If you get the warning, your fine. If you don't. then everything electronic you have on is a paperweight. Its not If, Its When...
Not to be doom and gloom, its just another thing you have to be prepared for.
Do you have your three day per person survival kit?
Though, What i'm more worried about would be a gamma ray burst from deep space. we get less warning about that and there's less that we can do. "oh look the sky is purple..." *dies*
