Today is a linky day. :-)
I came across these cool and stylish bags called Envirosax from
not martha. She linked to
this site, but they don't ship to Canada, as far as I can tell. I just went back to her blog entry and discovered that she also linked to the actual
Envirosax website in Australia. They ship all over and have more variety than the other site. If you're not in the US and want to order from them, you'll need to stick with their Aussie store. They have an online store that caters specifically to the US and one that caters to the rest of the world.
They are nylon bags that are quite large in size. They are extremely lightweight and roll up to a teeny tiny size. They are also, apparently, waterproof, but being unlined nylon, I don't know how that's possible. You can purchase them singly or in a set of 5 for about $30. They take Paypal! This rocks.
And then, while searching for reusable produce bags, I found this site:
reusablebags.com They have LOTS of cool stuff! They ship to Canada and they also take Paypal. It looks like they have an even better alternative to the Envirosax: ACME Bags
Workhorse Style 1500 and
Workhorse Style 1501. The 1500 is rip-stop nylon, which will last longer because it's easier to repair than regular nylon, should it rip. The 1501 is nylon mesh, which is just as good as, if not better than, rip-stop nylon.
DOOD! It's NYLON! How can that be a good thing for the environment? Check out their savvy answer
here.
They also carry reusable produce bags, which is how we found the site in the first place:
Produce Bags. We will probably be going with
these.
They even have
reusable sandwich bags!
And they have an assortment of
lead-free bags. Huh? Aren't all bags typically lead-free??
Apparently not. Associated Press:
Lead-laden lunchboxes OK'd by government"Almost every lunch box found with lead in the vinyl lining was made in China."
China's really fucking up left, right, and center these days...
They also carry SIGG and Klean Kanteen bottles with accessories.

Ok, so what do you do with all the plastic bags you DO have? One option would be to crochet them into longer-lasting, reusable plastic bags!

Instructions for cutting bags and making a ball of "yarn"Instructions for crocheting ball of "yarn" into a bag Someday, I will do this. We have so many over-sized bags that are not so good for picking up dog poo and lots of bags that have tiny and not-so-tiny holes in them that make them unsuitable for picking up dog poo. This would be a great way of doing something useful with said bags. Glad Lynx bought me a crochet book for giftmas! It will actually get used -- *looks down at belly* -- someday. Yes. Someday.
