Sup?
I really am terrible at updating LJ, not that that's anything new. Sorry though! I could blame it on being busy with school but that's only a half-truth. I've been lazy at writing anything lately. So here's a step towards fixing that.
Speaking of school, a scary thought occurred recently. Assuming I pass all of my classes this semester and next (something I'm definitely aiming to do), I'll graduate in December. That's scary. I'm going to pick up the application to graduate some time this week as well as get some credit issues (hopefully) squared away.
This semester I've been taking:
-Technical/professional writing: Or what I subtitle the class "How to become a slave to the wage." Okay, it's not all that bad. It's extremely boring and she has us doing way too much group work (which I despise). But I can see the merit in learning resumé writing skills, interview skills, presentation skills, and other similar white-collar matters. I'm sure I'll use some of it in the future. It doesn't stop me from detesting the class though!
-American Autobiography: I took it just for some credit and thought it was gonna be extremely boring. It's definitely my favourite class this semester and the professor is crazy and extremely nice and smart. We're reading autobiographies of American people and talking about them. Currently watching Angela's Ashes which is just about the most depressing movie ever. But it's good. We also have to read an autobiography of our choice and write a paper about it. After a lot of going back and forth with a long list of things I wanted to read, I bought two and chose from there. The runner up was Anthony Bourdain. His "Kitchen Confidential" is really interesting and I'll prolly finish it when the semester ends. But I went with my other choice, Brad Warner's "Hardcore Zen". He's an ex-punk rocker who got into Buddhism and is now a Zen Buddhist priest. His book is part autobiography, part philosophy and allllll interesting! I totally recommend it. I'm just not sure how I'll get a paper out of it yet...
- Basic reporting: Mostly really boring and I'm only taking it for my major. We mostly write news stories and he teaches us the same things over and over and over and over. Then occasionally take quizzes over stuff in the news or AP style.
- Desktop publishing: Totally not my thing. We work with programs like InDesign (mostly) and I think Quark soon... to make printed stuffs. We've done made a menu for a fictional restaurant (mine was waffle themed) and a banner for a real local Christian academy. I'm taking it as a major requirement, though I don't think new Cre-Wri majoring students have to take this for their degree anymore.
-Criticism: I'm convinced that this class exists to give scholars a job. My professor doesn't deny it. Sometimes it makes total sense and I see its worth. Sometimes I find it to be total BS and want to stab mine eyes out. Mostly the latter!
And next semester I'm taking... History of the English Language, Modern Grammar, Modern Drama, Myth and Civilisation, and Asian Culture (anthro!). I'm told that those first two are really hard classes, but I'll have the idea of graduating at the end of it as a motivation!
So, there's that. Over the summer I'm going to research JET more in depth, since I still really wanna do that when I graduate.
Other than that, I haven't been up to much. My NaNo ideas never took off but I've been still developing them further. The NaNo I did do never reached 50k but I'm still working on it. I haven't written on it as much as I should but I'm still working on it. As I tweeted a few months(ish) ago, I had a great idea of a direction to take it with a new character (something I haven't had in a while) but I haven't really implemented that yet. Still fleshing the character out some before I give him his premier. I miss the days of RP... I felt so much more motivated. The only other times I've been just as motivated were in my cre-wri classes (which I wish I hadn't exhausted!).
I felt I had so much more to write about but I'm grasping for those ideas now... So, I'll end it here and promise to do my best to make the next post a little sooner!
