Guh I have been nowhere in the vicinity of internet for days now. Last week there were rehearsals - loooong rehearsals - a bunch of days. And then on Thursday there was an anime convention, so there went Thursday

XDDD no, I'm distinctly *not* Chassidic. Chassidic music is the colloquial name for music that's basically passages from the Torah (or any other religious text, really) put to music. It's a music style, but you can have all sorts of genres, even things that are sort of like rock. You've got stuff like this, and stuff like this, and a whole lot in between. Many of the singers are American, or sing with a heavy Ashkenazi accent, but there are also Israelis. (know Greenday's Basket Case? Have the Chassidic version
:) s'ok. Thing is, Israeli society is very varied. Even if a person goes to Chassidic prayers it doesn't necessarily mean they're Chassidic - maybe they just like the style. It's all becoming one big mix, as people intermarry. (also remember that Israeli society is divided into about 209875 different distinct groups. What kind of Chassidism? You're being too general XDD)
In terms of customs, I'm Turkish, though I'm mixed-blood.
I grew up around Lubavitch Chassidism. I'm not a huge fan, because they tend to be on the judgemental, "What I do is right so what you do must be wrong" side...
But I don't think my sister who lives in Ashdod is Lubavitch any more. I think she's more of a "generic" type of Chassidic. Not sure what.
I didn't realize that Israeli society was quite so fractured! :-)
I've actually encountered some pretty amazing Chabadniks, which is probably why I tend to feel more positively about them. Also, I do like their philosophy overall, I think they have some good ideas
( ... )
This is fascinating. I guess I probably should have known this, but I never really thought of it in these terms. It's not a "melting pot" like America used to tout itself. It's more of a Mosaic, made up of a thousand differently textured pieces. Cool.
One of my best friends is a Chabadnik. Half my family are Chabadniks. I guess over the years, they've just frustrated the heck out of me! :-D
Israel did have its own 'melting pot' mentality, but it only worked to a certain extent. Nowadays people basically figure that give them 2-3 generations, and they'll fit in somehow or make their own niche. There's this strange balance between preserving family/country customs, and trying to make unified 'Israeli' society. But yes, mosaic is probably a very good word for Israeli society :)
Well, living with people in close quarters tends to show both the best and worst of them, so I can see how you'd be frustrated XD I don't have too much negative feeling, because in Israel, Chabad just isn't one of the real troublemaking groups.
and lol, I was up bidding on ebay. Wanted a pair of Victorian shoes, but lost :( those things sell for freaking expensive!
this sort of thing. Definitely old, but I doubt they're from the actual Victorian era XD But yeah, they sell pretty decently. ........you wouldn't happen to have a pair, would you...?
So you *are* Chassidic, eh? I wondered...
