Note that this entry and the next differentiate from the Sword & Sorcery source books text, specifically regarding the nature of Urkanthus and the timing of Mesos's death, required by the specifics of my Scarred Lands campaign.
The Preparation for War and the Death of Urkanthus
It is said that the war between the gods and the titans was inevitable. It was cemented on the day of Vangal’s creation. For the titans to have created such powerful children, and have abused them so badly, how could they not expect a rebellion?
Yet it was Hedrada, god of wisdom, one of the few gods not to be abused by his parents, who lead the cause to war. With the help of great smith Corean, he developed a plan. Hedrada then spoke to the gods individually, to learn if he had enough support for their plan. He also spoke to his mother, Denev, Titan of the Earth, and the one titan most likely to betray her brethren for the benefit of her mortal creations. He then called a council of all the gods on Mt. Nammul.
The details of this fateful council are known only to the gods. It is said that most of the gods supported the plan. A few, like Madriel, were hesitant, fearful that it would cause too much destruction. Corean intended to design a weapon that would sever the titans from the world. As the earth itself, Denev would be safe, but the other titans would lose their powers and become completely vulnerable. Hedrada’s argument, along with Denev’s support, eventually swayed nearly all of them. Only one god stood firmly against him, Urkanthus. Urkanthus was the god of dragons and the god of balance, very used to arguing with titanic forces. He believed that the stagnation wrought upon the world with the destruction of the titans may well cause the downfall of Scarn itself. Urkanthus foresaw this weapon as a potential disaster for the entire world.
The more fervently the other gods came to favor patricide, the more passionate Urkanthus became in his arguments against it. So Hedrada called for a short rest to let tempers cool.
During that rest, Vangal sought out the other evil tempered gods, Chardun and Belsameth. They knew that a successful war would be unlikely if the dragons stood against them. Urkanthus had already called all of the dragons back to their homeland, centuries before, when the unrest against the titans first began. If the dragons sided with the titans and Corean’s weapon failed, the gods would likely lose the war. So, Vangal came up with a plan of his own.
Urkanthus was vulnerable in the humanoid form he took during the council meeting, that of a four armed gigantic man, instead of his normal form of a six legged colossal prismatic dragon. While waiting for the council to reconvene, Urkanthus sought out Madriel, hoping to persuade her to side with him. Belsameth disguised herself as her sister Madriel, and agreed to meet with him. As he approached her, Chardun came from behind Urkanthus and quickly threw his chains around him, making it impossible for him to change back into a dragon. Then Belsameth changed back into her true form, and fed Urkanthus poison to weaken him and make him vulnerable. Then Vangal used his twin axes to sunder Urkanthus, slicing him up until he was utterly destroyed.
To avoid the reprisal of the dragons, and Urkanthus’s other followers, the three sought to erase Urkanthus from existence. Chardun destroyed all writings of the god, Belsameth destroyed the memories of him, and Vangal destroyed all of his temples. Even the memories of the dead were erased.
Nothing now stood in the way of the war.
