Movie was very pretty and well-acted; Lyra, Mrs. Coulter, and Iorek were particularly made of awesome. However, I felt like the plot was smooshed too much, meaning that things that were difficult and time-consuming in the book were solved by deus ex machina in the movie just to keep the pace fast. It might confuse people who didn't read the book.

I kept expecting Ma Costa to holler, "NOT MY SON, YOU BITCH!" ;)

Oh, and...

WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF? WTF?

THEY LOPPED THE LAST SCENE OFF THE STORY. YOU KNOW, THE ONE AT THE VERY END, WHERE AWFUL THINGS HAPPEN AND THE GATEWAY TO THE OTHER WORLD GETS OPENED? (I guess they needed a Hollywood hopeful ending?) WELL, THEY DAMN WELL BETTER STICK THAT SCENE RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SECOND MOVIE WHEN THEY MAKE IT.

Also, and mind you I like Kate Bush, but the lyrics to her little song at the end felt a little heavy-handed. "OH HAI, let me sing you the whole plot." There's one line where she says something like "two worlds collide around her," and I turned to D. and said, "Except they don't, because THEY CUT OFF THE END OF THE STORY."

We were calling Maza a panserbjorne all night, though. :)

In other news, I very nearly lost my entire BPAL stash yesterday. A shelf gave way and the box plummeted about three feet. The bad news is that one of the oil blends fleabear made for me broke and spilled. :( The good news is that it was the only bottle that did. I'm shocked. A box full of little glass bottles falls three feet, and I only lose one? o.O

Did some of my Christmas shopping yesterday as well. Found some cool stuff. I do, however, need to remind myself that I am shopping for:
(a) my family
(b) my friends

and NOT

(c) myself
(d) fictional characters.

And that if I find myself looking at an item and thinking, "Wow, fictional character X would love this," it's time to back awaaaay from the shelf. And I also need to remember that yes, owls are cute, but the only one in my family who collects them is me, therefore buying all the owl stuffies and owl ornaments in the world won't get my shopping any closer to done.

Hmm. There is ice all over everything outside, and nothing worth eating in the house. This situation merits further study.
