A song about forests and prairies

Aug 31, 2009 20:42

(written on the plan back from Ottawa on Wed.)

The trees here were all planted one by one
On farms and fields, they try to soothe the sun
In my mind's eye I see how it looks to be flat
The long expanse of prairie stretching out like that

And we grow, grow, grow
Trying not to get knocked down, standing firm in the blowing...

I see the beauty now of the clouds that paint
Dusty, scattered shapes after the wind and rain
I see a lifetime of a steady road
But I miss the jouney of the river flowing

I can't find the answers but I need to sink or swim
When the thunderstorms arrive I know I'm really falling in...

And we grow, grow, grow
Trying not to get knocked down, standing firm in the blowing
And we love, love, love
Hoping everyday that we keep on growing

I get on a steel machine and I meet the sky
It puts me down gently in a lullaby
Of crickets and wild grasses, rocks and maple trees
In gnarled and mossy branches under canopies

I see the light wind down to the earth below
Watch the crooked path of a beetle going home

And I love, love, love
Tucked away from the thunder, I just need to stay under

You are with me in the mists and underneath the stars
We're closer than we've ever come and still too far
My feet a piece of earth stuck in the muddy ground
I hear you sing staccato, feel you wrap around

And we fall, fall, fall
I feel all of it wake me, no longer scared it will break me
And we love, love, love
In the deep of the night sky, looking on to the sunrise

And we fly...

Would we could swim here in the sunset with nothing to hide
But no matter where we are it's the same light inside
Somehow I've got to find a way to bridge this rough terrain
You keep your fingers round your tools and I'll be coming back again

And we grow, grow, grow
And we fly, fly, fly
And we love, love, love
We don't need to wonder why...
