another review: Rob Thurman's "Nightlife"

While reluctant at first, I picked up this one and was hooked from the first. Rob, who is in fact a woman, manages to capture my attention with an endearingly cynical nineteen year old. Her writing style is different from most in the same genre and while she uses a lot of myth and legend in the story, she also uses some child/nursey rhymes that had me reminiscing. Cal, who is the main character and protagonist (and half monster) is delightfully sarcastic and adorable in his teenage brooding. Being that the narrator is a male, a female reader such as myself, misses out on the drool-worthy boys, but the story itself is worth it. It's a wonderful combination of ancient mythology set in the new world. I love a story that shoves an ancient creature in the present and let's all hell break loose, which happens in this wonderful novel. Needless to say, i will be nabbing the next novels in the series.
