Mrs. Leeds was not looking forward to the birth of her thirteenth baby. She gave birth on a stormy night deep in the pinelands of southern New Jersey. She screamed and fainted when she saw her baby, born with horns, hoofs and a tail. He was kept locked in the basement for some time until he escaped into the pinelands, where many have seen him. He is known as the Jersey Devil.
I went to school with a member of the Leeds family. And yes, he was real. He still exists on tee shirts and mugs and postcards in south Jersey.
