Wash Out the Stain of Guilt
She ought to have been careful, but there is no safety, no true cocoon in Ohtori. The good fall, the bad break, and life goes on.
The memories come in brief flashes: a rose signet ring; the glint of a long, elegant sword; dark lips curving in a darker smile.
Utena has no answers for her aunt. The wounds (hundreds of swords swooping down, their wrath singing in the air, and then the image is gone) heal slowly until they're silver scars marrying her skin.
Utena waits in the dark for the monsters that never come.
She remembers coaxing kisses as strong hands held her down, narrow hips pressing against her own as she whimpered, shuddered, her whole world collapsing and rebuilding itself wrongly upon that single moment. She remembers no name; she doesn't think she wants to.
She doesn't return to school for a year; Utena avoids her old friends and tends to her aunt's fledging garden. She takes special care of the roses, but doesn't know why until -
The girl (bride? woman?) isn't the same: her hair is long and curling; her smile reaches her eyes.
"You don't remember," she says.
Utena stares. She remains silent; she isn't sure that words are enough. She suddenly hisses, jerking her finger to her mouth where it's been pricked by a thorn. The taste of blood is strong upon her tongue; the memories break free like a rose unfurling its petals towards the sun.
"Anthy," she breathes; then she is stumbling blindly forward into arms held wide in welcome. Anthy does not smell like roses.
The kiss is soft, hesitant, salty from their mingling tears. When they part, Anthy holds onto Utena's hand, her fingers warm and trembling.
Utena smiles. "Welcome back," she whispers.
Now, she knows she must never forget.
