Merry (slightly late) Christmas to you, too, Rose! :D
I've posted a bit of a reply over at your blog. (Yes, you made me get a Google account. I blame it on your compelling insights).
One thing I forgot to mention over there-
I'm not a fan of the sadness, either. That's part of why I never got into Martha. She knew that the Doctor was hurt (he only announced it to the entire universe every five seconds) yet did nothing to make him feel better. All she could think about was, "OMG, guyz, I cant b-lieve that the doktur is still hung up on that Roz grrl. DOKTUR, WHY ARE YOU NOT IN LOVE WITH ME NAOW? WHY, WHY, WHY, UR STUPID!!!" ... and I have no idea why I always write Martha in bad chat-speak. I'm sure there's a sound psychological answer somewhere. Anyways.

Season one was about healing. It was also about a loss of loneliness and about Rose finding equal footing with the Doctor.
Season two was about finding the cracks in that relationship. It was about the imperfections inherent in everyone. It was about touching immortality and getting burned. What kept that season glued together was the fact that, imperfections and immortality and craziness aside, ROSE WOULD NOT LEAVE. ONLY A WALL BETWEEN UNIVERSES COULD KEEP HER APART FROM THE DOCTOR AND VICE VERSA.
And season three was... dark. Darkety dark sad angst SHUT UP, MARTHA.

...gotta say, Rose, it's good to get that all out. XD Glad I have someone like you to air my grievances to. Heh.

I've put up most of my wordy reply at my blog xD And I'm more than happy to hear your grievances xD It's good to have someone to vent to, every so often.

Re Martha: I haven't actually watched much of series three, but it seems that a common grievance is a lot of the time she never really...acted like a med student. The closest thing I know to med students at the moment are the bio IB kids, and they are crazy :p They moan, but they get things done (and they're usually quite right to moan; they have a LOT on their plates this year!) Overall, they're open and fun to be around; they joke and the ones I know are not quick to judge. I did like Martha in "The Sound of Drums" and "Last of the Time Lords", but it wasn't in the way I liked Rose- Martha seemed like a good companion, but Rose was a good friend. Something along those lines, anyway. As I mentioned, not too great on the character front: I just steal good ideas from others :p

Also, I agree with your descriptions of series one and two: the first we saw the Doctor gradually gain that genuine joy and happiness again, and the second was testing and building the relationship. And the wall between universes can only keep them apart for so long. *nods* (L-Space theory, anyone? xD I'm on a Discworld/Doctor Who kick. What can I say?)

*Gasp!* You need to finish series three, woman! I mean, it does have some of the worst episodes in all of New Who *coughDaleksinManhattancough* but it also has some of the best, like 'Family of Blood' and 'Blink.'
Tell me you've seen 'Blink.' God, that was a bundle of awesome. *hugs Steven Moffat*
Anyhoo...
I liked Martha for about three episodes. Then I began to dislike her with a passion that knows no end.
It wasn't a shipper thing- I wanted to like her. I wanted her to help the Doctor heal after losing Rose. Sadly, my hopes were dashed against the rocks of unrequited crushing. It seemed that the entire focus of her character was on her fawning over the Doctor. She never really developed into a 'person.' I mean, Rose... I'd know Rose's character anywhere. It was whole and distinct. Martha's was... not. It's like someone at the BBC sat down with a list of 'desireable traits' and just checked them off one by one. "Let's see... Med student. Check. Pretty. Check. Independent. Check. Smart. Check."
That sort of thing makes me queasy. There's nothing worse than a character that is never allowed to breathe. And you're right. I never saw her act like any of the med student's I've come in contact with. Hm.
(I actually think you're brilliant on the character front. I've just got a fixation. XD )
Hee. Oh, Discworld. I've only read two of the books in the series, but hopefully I'll soon be able to get my grubby paws on more...
