[His eyes showed his surprise...]His eyes showed his surprise when the boy that he couldn’t take his eyes off earlier that morning was there, in front of his door. Looking closely at the boy, Satoshi couldn’t hide his interest. The boy was handsome and for some reason, the look in his eyes showed stubbornness and spirit, in which Satoshi was more drawn. The boy’s lips were set grimly together, and he carried along with him a game console that he played continuously without looking at it. He looked extremely exhausted and determined, and a bit on the defensive.

“Hi,” the boy said, never taking his eyes off the console. “I’m Nino and I just moved next door with my best friend, Masaki.”

Satoshi kept his mouth shut, thinking that if he didn’t speak, the boy would think that he was deaf or mute and would just move on. However, even though he was silent, tugging on the towel on his head to keep it firmly settled there, the boy just kept on babbling without effort as if talking rapidly was normal in all circumstances.

“…as I was saying, he got angry at me for talking about his ex,” Nino continued to babble, “and I was wondering if I could stay with you just for tonight.”

Satoshi looked at him with his mouth wide open. Not only he talked for three whole minutes without any breaks, he also asked to stay in his apartment without any hesitations. Satoshi took in all of the things that Nino said slowly before he spoke, “I’m really sorry but I don’t talk to strangers.” Satoshi was about to close the door when it stopped midway. Nino’s foot was on the way, clearly stopping Satoshi in closing it.

“I’m not a stranger anymore, am I?” Nino asked stubbornly. “I just told you my name and that I just moved in next door.”

Satoshi laughed nervously. “Are you serious?” he stopped, thinking carefully. “I don’t know you and your friend. I don’t even care why you fought and what happened. So, please, good night.”

Satoshi pulled the doorknob but Nino’s foot didn’t budge. Instead, the boy moved his body towards the opening - not bothering to look at his console anymore, maybe he paused the game - and looked at Satoshi directly in the eyes. His eyes were pleading, like a puppy’s, which Satoshi thought he wanted to melt into. Feeling helpless, Satoshi had no other choice but to step in and invited the boy inside.

“Wow! Thanks!” Nino said in glee. “Your apartment’s nice.”

Satoshi smiled, pleased with all the compliments. He closed the door once more, both of them inside, and walked to the living room. He could see that Nino was already settled in the couch, playing more of his game. It was annoying but warm for Satoshi. He thought that the boy fit in his apartment with ease. He was scared at the thought so he brushed it away.

“You’ll just stay in the living room, right?” Satoshi asked, nervous.

Nino looked up from his game and answered, “Yep. Thanks!”

Satoshi murmured, “Alright,” and he walked to the bathroom. He took off his clothes and went in the bath. The water was warm and calming. He felt better now that his ears were back to normal. He knew that something bad will happen if other people see his cat’s ears and he was afraid of the thought. As the water from the shower poured, he closed his eyes and let it calm his senses.

After fifteen minutes in the bath, he walked out with only a towel covering his lower body. He had forgotten about his guest and when he entered the living room, he almost screamed when he saw Nino’s body lying on the floor. He walked towards the body and saw that the boy just fell asleep. He grinned at the sight. He never thought that he would allow other people to enter his apartment other than Sho and his parents.

Changing into clean clothes, Satoshi took a blanket from his cabinet and covered it on Nino’s body. The boy looked charming in his sleep and Satoshi’s heart skipped a beat as he looked at him. He felt bad at the thought since when he had the enchantment, he swore that he will never fall in love since people will think that he was a devil or something like that.

Although he swore to himself that, he was wavering now that he was seeing how honestly adorable the boy that was there, sleeping, on his couch. Satoshi could feel something buried deep down inside him open just by looking at Nino. It was as if Nino had a special charm that captivated his inner being. But being who he was, he pushed all these thoughts aside and went to his room to sleep. Everything’s going to be better when I wake up, Satoshi thought as he slid into his sheets, switching off the lamp.

“Care to tell me where you spent the night?!” Satoshi could hear Masaki’s loud voice in the morning. He had almost forgotten that Nino had stayed in his living room last night before he heard the booming voice of Masaki, waking him up.

Satoshi scratched his eyes, stretched his arms and lifted his body up from the bed. He walked robotically to the bathroom and washed his face. He was a little disoriented but he had to go to his part-time job that morning. He had been asking for days off when he was sick since he was afraid that he would suddenly transform in the library that he working at.

Satoshi went to work and he kept to himself. The silence in the library was like music to his ears - soft and melodic - the introvert part of him wished to spend all his entire life inside the library. He kept the read books in their proper bookcases, slammed the dusty old newspapers to the restricted section and the old magazines to their racks. It was as if he was used to the routine. He wasn’t particularly clean at home but he kept everything in their proper places. It’s like the library was a second home to him.

He went home at three that afternoon, listening to the songs on his i-pod. He wasn’t aware of his surroundings that when he had reached his apartment, he was flabbergasted when he saw the lights were open and when he turned the knob, the door was unlocked. He immediately went to the living room only to see Sho sitting on the sofa with Masaki and Nino.

They were all laughing out loud that when he entered the living room, Sho was practically shocked that he was already home. “Yo!” greeted Sho after a moment’s shock, composing himself. “I just got to meet your new neighbors that you’ve forgotten to tell me.”

Satoshi could see that the new comers were welcomed by Sho with open arms even though he had barely known them. But, he dismissed the thought and went to sit beside Sho, across the two. “So, what’s up?” He bothered to ask, but clearly, he wasn’t the center of their discussion and he was thankful about that. He was a little scared that Sho had already told the two of his ability to transform but his best friend held his secrecy in the minimum, which he was secretly grateful.

Sho was the one who answered Satoshi. “We were just talking about their apartment and the people that live near here. They seem to like the ambiance here.”

Nino joined in, “Yeah. The neighbors are friendly and hospitable.”

Satoshi could feel his face turn into a bright red tomato with Nino’s remark; he felt that his heart was going to pop out of his rib cage. He wasn’t particularly attracted to the younger one yet but he couldn’t seem to hide his feelings without Sho noticing.

Sho looked at him with curiosity. “How’s work?” He didn’t want to put off Satoshi in front of their guests that he thought that he could ask his real question later on, when their guests had gone home.

“It was…” Satoshi thought of the right word, “calming.”

The afternoon went on with stories of Nino and Masaki. Sho questioned them like an inquisitor which Satoshi found funny. He was happy to know more about the two, especially about Nino’s past. He was so dumbfounded when he learned that Nino was a former game master before he stopped. He wasn’t sure what game masters do but Satoshi knew that it was more of playing role playing games and organizing.

“…so, I wasn’t really into working while playing,” Nino was saying but Satoshi wasn’t really focused on the words that were coming out of the younger one’s mouth but the mouth itself. “After a year, eventually, I stopped working and focused in playing.”

Seeing that Satoshi was engrossed in the younger one, Sho thought of talking to Masaki alone, leaving the other two together. “I was wondering if you could help me in buying some groceries. We don’t have enough food for four here,” Sho addressed to Masaki.

“Sure!” Nino and Masaki shouted in unison.
“I was going to ask Masaki only,” Sho said calmly, “It would be rude if we left Satoshi all alone, now would it?”

Nino looked from Sho to Satoshi. “Alright. I’ll stay here. But just so you know,” he warned, “Masaki’s eccentric when it comes to grocery.”

The two left Nino and Satoshi alone in the apartment as they walked away; talking to each other like they have known each other for decades. As they went, Satoshi felt panic but he had to endure. It looked like the two would be staying out for a long time. It was just six in the evening and Satoshi can’t guarantee that they would come back fast, understanding that Sho was teasing him.

Across him, Nino was already engrossed with his game console that all his fears were fading. There was nothing wrong with them being alone together. Or was it?
