Now Harloff, this is me being as serious as I can possibly be with you. I think the whole perfect band thing is not going to be something that anyone can achieve, because no one is perfect. We can only try to be the best that we are. Some of the things that we can do to reach that starts with the leaders of our band. It is important for those chosen leaders [like horn sargents and section leaders] to be qualified in many different ways.
Good Point
First off, he or she has to be able to do the normal marching stuff that is needed for marching. [IE. marching in time, knowing how to hold the instrument, and all that other stuff we have to do].
Second is that he or she has to be liked, or respected by the others in the section. [IE. no one wants to have a...pardon the language...bitchy leader.]
Third he or she has to have some fun in their bones. [IE. Karl aka BTK is a stern yet fun guy to be around. He knows when there is a time to play and when there is a time to work.]
Fourth, he or should should be picked on the things above and not because they're suck ups. [no one likes a suck up.]
Yep - you are right on! Its hard to teach that. We need to find the right personality!
All that is what starts a good marching season. Another thing that we can do as a whole band is, instead of making fun of those that need the extra help, we actually help them. The buddy system that we were supposed to have never really worked because no one knew exactly what to do, and most of the freshman were too afraid to even talk to some of the upper class-men. So maybe we can have a big "ice-breaker" with the underclassmen and there buddies at the beginning of the marching season so they won't be afraid to talk to anyone.
Couldn't agree more!
I think that is all that I have for now, that is the best answer that I can come up with. I just know that we all need to move on from last year, and I am sorry for everything that did happen. All I know is that this year as the end of the season comes I don't want to think the way that I did last year. I was ready for it to end, which is a shame because most of my other years I didn't want them to end. I wanted to win the eagle for Amber Boyden, because she has been the best section leader that the clarinets have had. I wanted her to be able to be happy at the end of the year. All I know is that this year I am dedicating my season to her and for her. She deserves that and much more. One thing that I think you got right was the voting for section leaders. We should continue with that, because the section should know who is best to lead them.
OK ... remind me and we will do that again at the end of the year.
Sorry so long winded, but I did have a lot more on my mind. I hope you take all of this into consideration, because all that I have said has come straight from my heart. Thank you for taking the time to see me in my serious mode. Now I can get back to being you "rival".
Signed,
Lakesha
Thanks ... great stuff.
Harloff!!
