I was thinking in the car tonight that
the first Shakespeare I ever learned - which was, in point of fact, my first experience of participating in theatre - is about freedom.
And I really like that. It makes me happy for all the lines I can draw between a six year old me and a thirty year old (well, almost) one.
I also like that public schooling was still liberal enough in the late seventies / early eighties that I had a class (specifically Ms. Cora Bridges' class) where we learned Shakespeare and performed bits of Homer (in pirate gear!) when I was in first grade. Makes me sad for my friends' first graders who don't get that out of taxpayer-funded schooling today.
