Original fiction meme - Day 27

27. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.

Not that much. Sometimes I can go for ten chapters before realizing I've totally forgotten to describe my main character. And such descriptions are often more along the lines of "blond hair, blue eyes, tall, average weight" than really detailed. Unless explicitely stated otherwise, you can consider my characters as "physically average, neither beautiful nor ugly". I think the only feature I tend to put emphasis on is the colour of their eyes. Don't ask me why, but eyes motifs as something recurrent in my texts/worlds.

Oddly enough, I start to really work on an appearance design when I happen to draw my characters. Once I do that, they become more defined to me, and I edit my written descriptions accordingly. This is the point at which specific, defining features worm their way in: dreadlocks, items of clothing, peculiar jewelry, etc. (And there's a couple of specific cases, like Ewan's-I only realized myself that he was sort of officially cute/handsome when I played him in a RPG, found myself with points I didn't know where to put, and ended up throwing them in Charisma and Appearance, just because the other alternative (Manipulation) wasn't his style. No kidding. XD)
