Dear Peter Jackson,
I'm sure that somewhere in "The Hobbit"... behind all this 3D technique stuff ... there is a very touching, heart-warming, visual impressive movie. Sadly I wasn't able to find this for most of the first movie... the exception may being the last 20 minutes or so. Sadly I'm very disappointed, as I had such high hopes and even defended the decision to make this movie in 3D. But what I wasn't prepared for was the lack of a soul that came along with 3D and the loss of those impressive landscapes to what I call a "designed at the computer" - kind of look.
Yes, they are still there... you made sure to incorporate a lot of beautiful places from New Zealand... but it all doesn't come across as lovingly and well thought of as in your wonderful "Lord of the rings"-movies.
There is another thing that bothered me upon my first view, but I'm prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt here, until I've seen the original language version and not the German dubbed version. Just in case no one bothered telling you: the dubbed version comes across as a slapstick kind of movie, with very bad jokes and timing. I for one didn't realize this wasn't supposed to be a prequel to "the lord of the rings"-movies. I do realize the book your movie is in part based upon is a children's book. But then again, you did add so much additional stuff ... did you really needed to incorporate (as I said in the German dubbed version) such silly jokes?
I hope to find a 2D with original language and if that doesn't work out I am prepared to might giving it another go in 3D... if there is no English version available otherwise. But colour me very disappointed in what you have provided with the first part of your new trilogy.
Yours,
