And here's the reason why.
Autism. You might have seen the movie "Rain Man". You might have heard about it on the news or read an article in the newspaper. But most likely you'll not know much about Autism. That was the case with Kate Winslet as well. That is: until she was asked to record the narration to the documentary
"A Mothers Courage". Through this documentary she befriended the mother of Keli, a young autistic boy who learned to communicate at the age of 10.
Inspired by his poem "The golden hat", Kate Winslet and the mother of the young boy started a foundation called "Golden Hat Foundation" that focus on autism advocacy. In order to raise money for the foundation, Kate had the idea to send out an old hat of hers together with a simple digital camera. She got in touch with a variety of celebrities and asked them to take a self portrait with the hat. The celebrities were also asked to put themselves in the role of an autistic human being communicating for the first time. They were asked to write down the first sentence they'd most likely spell.
The book has now been released just a couple days ago here in Europe and will be released in Early April in the USA. And what can I say... I truly enjoyed reading it and seeing those self portraits. I've gathered some from the internet for you to get a first impression (they'll be featured behind the cut).
Here's a quick overview of some of the celebs contributing to the book:
Kate Winslet (of course)
Leonardo DiCaprio
Meryl Streep
Elijah Wood
Tom Hanks
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Peter Sarsgaard
George Clooney
Matt Damon
Jude Law
Justin Timberlake
Emily Blunt
Kevin Bacon
Kim Catrall
Zac Efron
Oprah Winfrey
...
just to name a few.
I'd like to recommend this book to you very highly.
I'm sure you'll not regret it and it will help secure funds for Kate's "Golden Hat Foundation". My fellow European can order it from the amazon stores here in Europe as well. There's also a KINDLE edition for this book. The pricing is about 17 EURO (19 US Dollar).
Thank you very much for reading.
