Okay, so living alone is really ... lonely and boring. And I have no room for cats or anything, so I decided to get rats. After a few weeks of research and buying supplies, I went out Tuesday and bought 2 little girls.
Unfortunately they are horribly unsocialized, so I am going to keep track of progress here because I am a huge nerd.
They look almost exactly alike, but Violet is a bit darker and Leeloo is lighter.
Tues/ Day 1: Petco employees seem like idiots, so Kerrie the sap takes home 2 girls. Neither would come out of the cage, ran into igloo/tube when I opened the doors or any loud noise happened. Figured out the ramps and food dishes after a few hours. They did peek out when I talked to them though! I put up a 'gate' (boxes and crap) and left the cage door open and sat and watched tv next to them for a few hours. Both are sneezing a bit but I hope they're just adjusting to the new bedding. Treated to carrots, broccoli, and apples (didn't seem too interested) instead they liked my chicken noodle soup.
Wed/ Day 2: I put up the gate again, today was much better. Got them both to take a little food from me through the bars, and even with my hand in the cage a few times. Violet goes nuts for corn (corn nuts?) and ventures outside the cage for a few kernels. They figured out the hammock a bit and are sleeping out in the open more often. Tried fruit and oatmeal which they loved, corn, and a couple goldfish crackers. They are going to be fat rats.
Thurs/ Day 3: Barrier up again, Violet is getting gutsy and running around exploring as long as I'm not in there with her. She climbed up the cage a few times which was cute. Any time I get too close she just runs back in though. They both like the screen open for fresh air and are sniffing and sneezing a bit. Both will take food from my hand now :O
Will write more later. And you thought Meerkat Manor was exciting ;)
