It wasn’t supposed to be this way. He was the one who went off to risk life and limb all the time. He’s the one who plowed into the unknown to face the unseen danger that await there. He’s the one who was willing to die to protect the city and its inhabitants.
She stayed home. She was the political side of the battle. She stayed safety out of harms way. She was one of those inhabitants he was supposed to be protecting all that time.
Late that night, the gate activated. An IDC was sent through, and the shield was lowered. It only took the two gate technicians on duty five seconds to realize that the code had been compromised; however, it only took the intruders six seconds to kill them. After the technicians were taken care of, it was only seconds until they were in her office, and they had her. They activated the gate again and were gone before anyone could get there to stop them.
Exactly twenty-four hours later, her body was returned, beaten and bloodied, with a note to the Atlantis mission.
“You all ruined our lives, so we took her life as punishment.”
He sat in his quarters thinking about how this should not be happening, and how he should’ve been able to prevent it. If he had made her go to bed, then they would’ve had to search for her, alerting other’s to their presence. If he had demanded a stronger military presence in the gate room during the night, then maybe someone could’ve taken them out.
He couldn’t help but think of how it should be his memorial service in Stargate operation in a few minutes instead of hers. He couldn’t help but think of all those things he should’ve told her before, but would never get the chance to now. He couldn’t help but think of how much he really loved her.
“Sheppard?” Rodney stuck his head into John’s room.
“Yeah, Rodney, Come in.”
“They’re ready for us. We should go.” John stood up and followed Rodney into the gate room. Everyone looked up at John and waited for him to speak. Slowly, he opened his mouth.
“Today we are here to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Dr. Elizabeth Weir…”
