The Computer Saga Continues

Nov 02, 2007 12:48

I have mentioned previously that my desktop (server) is quite sick, going up and down like a yo-yo (though it's been better today and yesterday, probably because the weather has been cooler). The day I got back from NZ, I ordered a replacement computer online.

It seemed to be fine, I checked the status, and it was processing, but I hadn't gotten any confirmation email from them (I still haven't, actually). I'd primed my parents (who live two blocks away) to take delivery for me, since I'd be at work, not at home. On Tuesday I rang the computer people (they're based in the same city as I) and they said it had been despatched already, and should be delivered that afternoon or next morning.

I called my parents. No computer.
The next day I called my parents. Still no computer.

This morning I called the computer people again, quite cross, and told them it hadn't been delivered. When she tried to give me the parcel number to talk to the courier people, I snapped at her and told her it was their responsibility, not mine, and they should talk to the courier people.

Then I looked at the order information again, and realized that I'd made a mistake. I'd intended to put my parents address as the shipping address, and I thought I had, but then I realized that I'd put their street number, but my street name, so it had possibly been delivered to my neighbours down the street. So I went out the door (today is one of my RDAs) and walked down the street to talk to them. But there was no answer (and there was mail in their mailbox, so they possibly had been out at the time of delivery).

Then I found a message on my answering machine when I got back home, from the computer company, giving me the courier company number and parcel ID. (Why they didn't just tell me the status of the parcel I don't know). So I rang up the courier company. While I was waiting in the queue, the waiting-messages included information about their website, so I looked up the website and found that they had made two attempts to deliver, but there had been nobody home. So they still had the computer. Then I got to the front of the queue, and the lady there was pretty nice, but said that I'd have to talk to the computer people in order to get my delivery address changed "for insurance purposes". But at least I figured out with her that changing the delivery to my parents place was better than changing it to mine, since they wouldn't be able to deliver before Monday (since it was already after noon, and it was too late for today).

So I called the computer company and explained that the shipping address was wrong (though I had to explain a few times to get the guy (yes it was a different person) to understand). So hopefully they are going to get the shipping address changed, and is should be delivered to my parents on Monday.

Moral of the story: do not make purchases online when one is spaced out from exhaustion because one had to get up at 4am to fly home from overseas.

arrgh, life
