Vignette

This was inspired by a writing prompt on Sarah Hoyt’s page.
Vignettes by Luke, ‘Nother Mike and Mary Catelli

So what’s a vignette? You might know them as flash fiction, or even just sketches. We will provide a prompt each Sunday that you can use directly (including it in your work) or just as an inspiration. You, in turn, will write about 50 words (yes, we are going for short shorts! Not even a Drabble 100 words, just half that!). Then post it! For an additional challenge, you can aim to make it exactly 50 words, if you like.

We recommend that if you have an original vignette, you post that as a new reply. If you are commenting on someone’s vignette, then post that as a reply to the vignette. Comments - this is writing practice, so comments should be aimed at helping someone be a better writer, not at crushing them. And since these are likely to be drafts, don’t jump up and down too hard on typos and grammar.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.

Your writing prompt this week is:

dull

It didn’t quite fit the actual prompt, so I decided to put it here.

There’s a reason we call it the Chaos Realm. The laws of physics that you think you know don’t work there - up is down, or maybe diagonal.  If you drop something it may fall, it may float or it could fly away.  Everything is shades of grey, from as light as an overcast day to as dark as coal and some shades you can’t describe. There are no fixed landmarks and unless you can read the currents, pinpoint the gates, you get turned around and lost.   Many young Walkers who found the realm by accident never made it out.  And there are beings that live and hunt there, we call them daemons.  You can’t always see or hear them.  They will hunt you the same as they hunt each other.  That’s why you always make sure you are armed before crossing over, and why you never enter unless you are with an experienced Walker.   (Star Price talking to a young, apprentice, Walker)
