Six Feet Under is occasionally very, very difficult to watch, but only because it is so excruciatingly good. I can't really describe it to you without it losing something in the translation; all I can really do is recommend watching it, and starting from the beginning (because it is, after all, the beginning), and sticking with it. It's very good, and it's one of the few shows I've seen that does a very good job with all of its characters as far as approximating real life goes - this is part of what makes it as good and as real as it is.

It's probably been said, in different words, that a work of art can be measured by the reaction that it evokes in its audience, and this show does that to me a lot. It hurts, and the hurt is real, whether or not the cause of it is fiction. And if I can get that from exactly one television show, then what the fuck is all this inferior shit doing on television?
