I decided to install Ubuntu Linux 6.1 tonight, and not only is it already running, but it comes loaded with networking, Firefox and GAIM (not to mention other stuff like OpenOffice). Loaded. As in, you don't need to install them. Because they're already there.
I think I love this thing. I think it is my favorite thing ever.
My decision was largely based on the fact that I don't play many games any more, and I don't do a lot that requires an application I'd have to pay for. (Besides, I'm fully prepared for Vista to be not worth my personal time or effort.) I still have some configuration to do with it, and some things to learn about it, and I still have XP installed (dual-boot) in case I have some bizarre need for it, but I can safely pull any files I still need from the Windows partitions as needed.
It looks like we have a new champion.
