Updates. 58. visit 10 national parks or national historic sites (now 4/10)
Sunday, we went museum-hopping to celebrate my birthday. We visited the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which I'd visited before and is kind of meh. Salem the city is much more interesting, and we walked around a bit and enjoyed that. Then we moved on to the Saugus Ironworks National Historic Site, which was COOL. I had no idea it was there. A whole complete rebuilt 1640s ironworks with a forge and smelter and all sorts of other nifty stuff. Totally unexpected and really, really neat.
39. attend 15 new museum exhibitions (now 4/15)
Unbound:" Highlights from the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum. Since we were so close, we swung by the Peabody Essex; I was under the mistaken impression that they still had an exhibit up about shapeshifting symbolism in Native American art. They did not, which was sad, but they did have this terrific little exhibit, which was nicely balanced in many ways: variety of objects, "coolness" of objects (a map of the world drawn in Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate; a Bible with a bullet in it from the Civil War; an exquisitely done book of watercolors painted by a sailor on a clipper ship, to name a few), number of objects for the space, and amount of text.
