spring 2010: emanuel ungaro

I was planning on waiting till all of the fashion shows were over to post my thoughts on my top 10 or so favorite ones, but I just witnessed a show so completely terrible that I just had to get my opinions out into the open.

Some of you may have heard of the unfortunate firing of the talented Esteban Cortazar from the brand Emanuel Ungaro (for refusing to work with a celebrity artistic advisor - I honestly don't blame him) - and then even more unfortunate replacement: newcomer Estrella Archs as head designer and, as "artistic adviser," Lindsay Lohan. I for one was shocked at the poor choice of Lindsay - she can barely keep herself together - how on earth could she put together a show worthy of a Paris runway? My reaction was the same as Saint Tim Gunn's: "It’s got to be a publicity stunt! Or a crack-smoking board of directors?"

And someone was smoking crack, because that collection was atrocious: questionable color combinations, outdated drop-crotch pants and fur stoles, poor tailoring and construction, and the completely tasteless sequin-heart nipple pasties. It was so bad, I felt secondhand embarassment just watching it, and I cannot imagine the mortification of all of the industry members who actually witnessed that trainwreck of a fashion show. Letting LiLo have creative control as a title is one thing; but to let her invade and desecrate the sacred Paris runways? Or any runway at all? Downright insulting.
