you're either in or you're out

So! Last night I finally had the time to catch up on the latest season of Project Runway (The All-Star Challenge and the first two episodes of season 6).

OK, so as I said a while ago, I was not excited about the move to LA, and I am still not happy about it. New York is, and will always be, America's (if not North America's) fashion capital. In LA, all you really have is swimwear, daywear, and people trying to look NYC-urban. Yeah, I know they have premieres and stuff for Hollywood, but NYC has that kind of scene in addition to an amazingly diverse fashion sense.

The premiere of Project Runway was highly anticipated, and it let me down a little. The first challenge was to design an outfit for an awards show. The guy who won (I want to say his name is Chris, but I'm not sure) made a dress that was probably the best one presented, but I just thought that ALL if them were horribly subpar. Lindsay Lohan was a surprisingly good guest judge, a lot better than I expected her to be. She gave some really insightful comments. That guy who looks like Perez Hilton (Mitchell? I think that's his name), with the sheer nightie just squeeked by, but I feel bad for his model. I thought she handled the situation very gracefully and took it all in her model stride. The girl who got eliminated, Ari, well, her garment was just a mess. In the beginning of the episode I thought she was just annoying, but when she was leaving, she said that she learned to take risks responsibly, and I liked that she didn't blame the judges for not seeing her vision or something. (Did anyone else notice that she looked a lot like Lindsay's ex, Samantha Ronson? Could that be the reason she was really eliminated?)

The second episode was better, I guess. The designers had to make maternity outfits for Rebecca Romijn, who by the way looks amazing pregnant. I really liked Shirins outfit, I glad she won! She's really adorable, and her garment was very chic and wearable. I also really liked that other girl's dress, the girl with the Louise Brooks haircut (it takes me a while to learn names, sorry!). Even though it was a little nightgown-y, it was very pretty, and I love her Roaring-Twenties-vintage feel. I did not like Mitchell's outfit at all, and wholeheartedly feel he should have been sent home. Melvin's outfit was a little out there, but I thought he mixed concept and wearability better than some people do. Plus I really liked him (and his fabulous haircut) a lot - I thought he showed a lot of promise. I tend to like people who have concepts for their work, and I thought the "Mother Hen and her Egg" idea was quite beautiful, actually. But I really dislike Mitchell. I want him to leave, to leave and never return!

I'll go through the All-Star Challenge really quickly now. Some of my favorite designers from the past were there: Santino, Korto, Chris March, and of course, the gorgeous (but gay, sadly) Daniel V. I can safely say that some of the collections were hideous (cough cough, Mychael) and some were fab (Daniel and Chris). I am happy that Daniel V won, he's such a great designer! I liked Korto's collection, except I thought her red-carpet dress was a little high-school-junior-banquet-y. Well, an uber expensive and fabulous high-school-junior-banquet dress, but it didn't have the elegance and presence that Daniel's dress had. I didn't really like Sweet P's collection too much, except for her first dress (the one made out of leather). I love her, but that red carpet dress looked to me like a glorified nightie! The ruffles and color were not to my personal taste at all. But, all in all, I am very happy that Daniel V won! I've already seen the photos of hs upcoming collection, and I want about 80% of the outfits. He's amazingly talented, I know he'll go far. (oh, did anyone else find Chris adorable? But the poor thing, the reason he was so sleepy was because he got food poisoning the first day, and then was on diabetes medicine that made him sleepy - on top of being on Project Runway, getting 4 hours of sleep a night. Poor dear)

Oh, and on a quick off-topic: Grizzly Bear is playing for free in Brooklyn tomorrow, and I can't go! I hate that even during the summer, school manages to get in the way.
