OH MY GOD. MEN'S FREE SKATE LAST NIGHT. HOLY CRAP.
I will try not to freak out multiple times like I did last night, when I was literally shaking and crying watching the skating, and was kicked out of the TV room. Once again, I shall try. Can't make any promises.
So last night was the men's free skate for figure skating, and of course I watched it obsessively. At first I was mega pissed off at NBC not even showing it, so thankfully my family over at
ohnotheydidnt was able to point me in the direction of a live stream. Obviously I was really getting pumped for the final 6 skaters - aka the medal contenders - but I enjoyed eatching everyone else as well. I felt especially sad for Brain Joubert of France; he's usually such a wonderful skater, but this just wasn't his game. He did cite some personal issues going on in his life at the moment, so I hope he manages to get those under control and come back even stronger.
All throughout the broadcast, I kept a string of commentary going with my buds over at the free for fall post at ONTD, which such moments of intelligence such as:
"damn 16 years old? I feel unaccomplished"
-about Japanese skater Takahiko Kozuka
"those designs on his shirt remind me of sparkly cucumbers...or zucchinis
in any case, they're making me really hungry but I don't want to get up to look for food"
-in reference to Kevin van der Perren of Belgium's sparkly green top
"OK COMMENCE FABULOUS PRAYERS
HE'LL BE FINE BB! LOOK HOW GREAT HE WAS IN THE SHORT! WE MUST HAVE FAITH IN HIS FABULOSITY, AND HE WILL DO US PROUD"
-in reference to my, and a few other people's, incoming heart attacks regarding Johnny Weir's upcoming performance
"OMG I KINDA WANT PLUSHENKO TO FATHER MY CHILDREN"
-well...that one's self-explanatory
"OMG SOMEONE NEEDS TO TELL LYSACEK TO GO EASY ON THE GEL
I'M A GETTING A ROSS FUCKING GELLAR VIBE"
-In regards to Lysacek's gratuitous use of hair gel...or axel grease. I can never tell.
"HE'S SO BEAUTIFUL YOU GUYS
LIKE, REALLY BEAUTIFUL"
-About Stephane Lambiel. Youtube him, and you will understand.
"IF MY BBS PLUSHY AND JOHNNY MEDAL I WILL DIE"
-Once again...I don't think I need to explain
Yeah...my capslock key actually got jammed down and I was stuck in all capitals. Which I really didn't mind, because I was screaming and crying the whole time. But in regards to the top 6:
1. Evan Lysacek, USA, Gold Medal: Thought it was an excellent performce, although I still don't like the lack of a quad. Once again, needs to tone down the hair product use and take a break from the tanning booth. I hate that he starts fistpumping before he's finished the actual routine - it's really irritating! But really, a lovely performance, and although he wasn't my personal pick for the gold, I do love hearing our national anthem and he brought that to us. So congratulations to Evan for that. (I am trying my best to be nice...)
2. Evgeni Plushenko, Russia, Silver Medal: I would just like to say first off that it takes a shitload of talent to be able to take a 3 year break from skating, train for a year, and come to the Olympics and with a Silver Medal. A shitload of talent. And that Plushenko managed to do that blows my mind. Granted, I would have liked him to get the gold, but the fact that he lost it by only a point shows what talent he has. And also, in regards to his slightly bitchy attitude: It's a part of his appeal, at least to me. He's the best, and he knows it. It's better than him pretending to be humble. And yeah, I understand about sportsmanship, but...I don't know. Besides, I think he does it with a little self-parody anyway. If he doesn't, oh well, I still love him.
3. Daisuke Takahashi, Japan, Bronze Medal: He skated a great performance, and had lovely artistry. He's a solid skater, but his fall made me question his placement, because it wasn't like a stumble, but an actual fall. But kudos to him for being able to spring right back up and nab the bronze.
4. Stephane Lambiel, Switzerland: Stephane Lambiel is a beautiful prince and I love him. Not his best performance, with some definite mistakes, but as always, his his spins were magical and fluid and made me fall in love with him all over again. I don't know that he deserved 4th place considering Johnny's performance, but I'll get to that later.
5. Patrick Chan, Canada: This kid's eyes creep me out a little. They are like...rape eyes. I don't know. But that's besides the point. He skated a nuce, mostly clean performance - a good Olympic debut to have. I feel a little sorry for him because all of the Canadian sports federations were building so much hype around him and I think the pressure just must have gotten to him. But yeah, a very nice performance - and he's only 19, so there is more to come from him, hopefully. I think it's due to mostly politics within the North American skating federations that he made the top 5, but oh well...
6. Johnny Weir, USA: This fierce diva skated a fabulous program and was robbed and severely underscored. Really only one noticeable error, and wonderful clean jumps every time. His artistry, his strong point, was amazing, and he emoted wonderfully, as always. He certainly deserved to be ranked above Chan, no question, and in my opinion, deserved to be above Lambiel as well. He was wonderful - his absolute best, and it's such a shame that so many judges decide to score him based on his life off the ice as opposed to on it.
PERSONAL FAVORITE MOMENTS OF THE NIGHT:
Sorry this ended up so long...and I kept the freakouts down to zero! Yay for self-restraint.
Princess Johnny thanks you for your time
