come together

I'm sure everyone by now knows of the great tragedy that has transpired in Haiti this past week. It is difficult to truly imagine the scope of complete devastation that the people of Haiti and their loved ones abroad are facing now.

In addition to the infrastructure damages caused on Haiti's already terrible infrastructure, the earthquake has created a severe lack of available food and clean water, as well as homes for those who were displaced.

But even when face to face with this tragedy, there are still people like Pat Robertson who insist that this natural disaster was caused by a "pact" Haiti made with the "Devil" two hundred years ago in order to be freed from French colonialism. There are people like Rush Limbaugh who say that we shouldn't give any aid to Haiti, because to do so would be supporting the "Obama beauracracy."

All I ask, and all the people of Haiti ask, is to set aside your religious biases or politics or prejudices, and just be human - as well as humanitarian. There is an entire nation of people completely devastated by something they had no way of controlling, and as a privilaged nation with the means to help, it is our duty to do so. So please donate to the cause. If you're worried about scams, donate to organizations that are well known to be reliable: Oxfam, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, the list goes on.

At school, myself, my friend Anna, and my economics teacher organized a fundrasier for Oxfam and the Red Cross to help the pople of Haiti. We got Starbucks coffee (thanks to Starbucks - they were kind enough to make a sizeable donation) and hot bagels and sold them in the school from 7 to 9 am. Even when the coffee and bagels sold out, and we started selling water bottles and snacks, people came just to donate to the cause. At the end of the day, we had raised $670 for the cause! It's so nice to see thet despite all of the crazy and hateful people in the world, there are equally kind and compassionate people out there as well.

Oh, and by texting "HAITI" to 90999, $10 will be added to your cell phone bill, and will be sent to the Red Cross. ALL of it goes to the Red Cross, and none to your cell phone provider. Together we can help rebuild Haiti - every little bit helps!
