The 49th day

This past week has been interesting. Volunteered to help lead a High School English camp last week, since I'd done it with a couple of friends last year...and we even had a meeting last week to try and get it together. Then...the typhoon came.

The 8th typhoon of the year ended up passing us by, smashing into Taiwan and China instead. However, the gusts in excess of 15m/s were enough to cut the camp short by one day, which meant that we unfortunately lost the main point of the camp, the skits. In hindsight, we all agreed that it would have been much better had we been able to do them - I remember last year's groups, where students stepped to the front to lead and everyone worked really hard in using the English they knew. But given that they would only have had about 2 hours to come up with and rehearse it, would it actually have been possibly to cut everything else and just do the skits?

Well, at least they still enjoyed the incredibly wet campfire and the smores!

(It was also much easier to fool everyone into believing that the ALTs didn't speak any Japanese because all three of us really played it up, even making our students swear not to tell. Their reactions when the truth was confirmed was pretty funny, even though a few were already incredibly suspicious by then!)

But there's a birthday today, actually. And he's off on a ski-trip, without roaming. But I managed to call him anyway. The more important news though, is that there's going to be a wedding soon. No matter when it is, I'll be home! I just wish I could be more involved than I probably will be...
