I’ve been here for an entire week and a half, so its time for the requisite update. First classes:

Psy 290: Research Methods
The lecture portion of this class will be fairly simple, but the lab portion will be very difficult. The professor is good at lecturing but a little bitchy, while my TA is by far the nicest I’ve ever had. The material isn’t too hard to grasp, but the catch is that we have to design and carry out an experiment. Which isn’t too bad right? That is, if I had an idea. Any suggestions?

Chm 113: General Chemistry 1
This shouldn’t be too difficult at all. There won’t be anything I haven’t covered, and I seriously doubt there will be too many experiments I haven’t already done. The professor lectures well, and even throws in clips of movies when he can make them relevant (or even if he can’t). The other day before class he had an absolutely hilarious (and slightly scary) music video featuring none other than David Hasselhoff. See if you can find it on google, I think it was called “Hooked on a Feeling.” Speaking of music videos, go to youtube and look up Frontier Psychiatrist. It shows (roughly) where they got every snippet of sound in the song, with the notable exception of the creepy man-turtle.

Phi 306: Applied Ethics
This appears to be my only true easy class. The professor offers two extra credit papers a week, and as a result he had more than fifty A+ students last semester. I’m sure the material will be interesting, but we’re just getting a quick review of ethics now. Plus what other class do you get to argue about whether it is better for a dozen boys to burn a cat for fun or to go home and whack off to porn instead? Yes, it was an actual topic.

Phi 105: Introduction to Ethics
This will be an incredible class. It’s small enough that we can have meaningful and coherent discussions on topics, and we go into much more depth about the methodology of the field. Plus the professor goes by Joe. It will require a lot of reading (Kant included) and analysis, but it will be very much worth it.

So other than classes, a few other things will be different this year. Hopefully I’ll have a job, because I need one to avoid asking my parents for money. I’m hoping for something in the medical field (EMT for Maricopa County, $12/hour) or as a baggage handler (unlimited free plane tickets to anywhere). The first pays for itself with experience, and the appeal of the other seems pretty self explanatory.

Living outside the dorms is amazing! I’ll just have to be sure not to party too much :P My first weekend back was a little too much fun for me to feel comfortable posting on the internet where anybody could read it. I’m also looking forward to getting back in shape by hiking and rock climbing. Anybody up for a hike up Camelback or South Mountain?
