ooc - State of the muse and thoughts on the episode 2x12

So, here we are. It's been a hell of a morning for me, battling a flood, a download that wouldn't move its ass, a blackout screwing said download, returning the power and another download that refused to take less than 2 hours to get me the latest Walking Dead episode.

We all knew what Shane's fate was. From my point of view, it was impossible for the characters to work out their differences. There was no way Shane was going to attempt to fix the broken relationship with Rick. Rick was just a threat, the man who was going to raise his child with a woman that, whether she truly loved him back or not now, at least had admitted to have certain feelings towards him at the end.

We all knew this was going to happen. I can't complain, I bought a ticket for a zombie ride and we all know we can't expect the characters not to die (in horrible ways, I might ad). But I'm a masochist and I fell in love with a character that, despite his questionable morals, was complex, amazingly well developed and, on the bottom-line, human.

I'm just glad I got to see him go with fireworks and all, in an exciting episode that showed many of his complicated layers (and again, Jon Bernthal's amazing acting skills). And to top things up, I truly believe his last scene lives up to what happens to the character in the comic.

So, state of the muse! I've been debating it for weeks, thinking that Shane's turning point is probably right before Otis dies. The thing with Otis was definintely Shane's death sentence. Killing the living, in the name of keeping alive his loved ones at all costs, changed something in him. The change was even physical and long gone was the Shane that once played around with Carl as he teased Lori, or called Rick a brother and truly meant it.

It was before that when he truly considered leaving the group, aware that it was the only option at hand before he truly lost it. Killing Otis and proving to himself that Carl and Lori really needed him, specially after she asked him to stay herself was when Shane found it impossible to go away.

That's when I'm picking up with the AU. Beginning of season 2, while the group is still finding a place to establish itself. I'd love other members of the group to go with him, maybe an Andrea or anything who's willing to tag along. Also, pre-series or season 1 has been and always will be amazing to explore. Anything else, please be free to discuss, because there's no way I want to leave Shane behind.

Also, a last thought. Something an user on Tumblr called camewiththeframe put up together and that truly simplifies my thoughts on how the fandom has treated Shane:

Good point on perception, in RE: Shane & Daryl
  • Entertainment Weekly: Every time Shane does anything wrong I think, “Well, that confirms he’s a bad dude.” But when the episode opened with Norman Reedus torturing some guy who really hasn’t done anything wrong at all I just thought, “Well, that’s just Daryl doing his thing…
  • Robert Kirkman: [Laughs] Yeah. Daryl gets a pass. We want to like him. Meanwhile Shane is trying to do everything he can to protect people and everybody’s like, “That guy’s a villain!” It is a funny thing.

Now I need to get Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" out of my head. It's too obvious and cheesy even considering the situation. But part of me think that it's a song Shane would have hummed to while patrolling along-side his best friend. Today, I wanna stay with that thought.
