Broken by your voices

I've just experienced the strangest feeling upon listening to Kuchibiru de Kowasareru.

When I saw the pairing for the drama CD (Kamiya Hiroshi x Nojima Kenji) I was half-skeptical, half-expectant. I'm a fan of both seiyuus and to see them paired together was exciting and yet, I can't help but be skeptical at the thought of Kamiyan doing seme role. That guy has always been an uke for me and the few seme roles he did that I listened to, didn't leave me with much memorable impression. But it's based on Tachibana Venio's novel and beautifully illustrated by Nara Chiharu. Their names were enough to make me click on the download link without hesitation.

The drama opens to the beats of clubbing music. I was hooked. Just another reminder of how important BGM is to a drama CD. But that's not origin of the strange sensation. The origin was in fact Kamiyan's voice. I had expected to hear some deep-voiced arrogant seme vibes from him that I was taken aback when I heard his sasoi uke voice, "Ah, cigarette?", soft and lilting. Compared to Nojiken's cold voice right before it, "Apologies", it was difficult to tell which was the seme. What follows was probably one of the hottest interaction I've listened to (Although I might be biased as I think I'm still caught in the moment). It was unusual as they were merely talking accompanied with the pounding of the music in the background but then the music fades and I ceased to care which of them is the seme. They were just two men, Yuzuki and Chika, attracted to each other and they both sound amazing.

As the drama progressed, I started to see Kamiyan as the seme. It was clear that Nojiken is the uke. He was great as usual, sounding unsure, vulnerable, and yet in a way stubborn. He always does make a great angsty uke. It was in a way like swapping a sasoi uke x hetare seme pairing into sasoi uke x vulnerable uke in which the sasoi uke is the seme and is frankly quite vulnerable as well. Voicing a lonely character, Kamiyan also did a great job in conveying that loneliness in his voice.

Noticed, how I hardly mentioned the story/characters and instead kept yapping on about the voices/seiyuus. Well, it's because for me this drama is purely an aural treat. The combination of Nojiken and Kamiyan's voice was really a pleasure to listen to. The karami scene were neat and toned down, far from the loud, messy, passionate ones we normally expect in BLCD. It was the way I wanted it to be. Really, in the end it was their voices that leave such a memorable and yet strange impression on me. I do admit though, I'm also attracted to the angst in the story. I'm still after all, a sucker for angst before happy ending.
