Random CD to Check oiu

The Faux makes a uniquely different but still very familiar sound in their solid 2003 CD release of their self-titled “The Faux.” The band’s mere five song release previews a sound that goes all over the place, mixing upbeat rampant drum work with a chaotic and sometimes overly crazy synth orchestra and no lead guitars, making their sound all the more intriguing. They also display some of the best work right alongside with some of their…more unique work. The CD is started off on the right foot with their Placebo-meets-Bloodbrothers type opening song “Synthetic Hearts,” followed soon after by arguably their worst track of the CD, “Instrumental,” which sounds like nothing more than some two-minute sound bite that they stole from The Mars Volta. The one thing I thought throughout the entire CD was that they sound so much like so many other bands. Their vocalist sounds just like Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols, mixed with Johnny Whitney of The Blood Brothers while their riffing, hectic sounds similar to the golden days of At the Drive-In with their psych-rock sounds coming from At the Drive-In’s spawn The Mars Volta. If you’re a fan of these bands, then you undoubtedly will fall in love with The Faux and hunger for a CD longer than just five songs. If not, than steer clear of this band. On a scale of one to five, I would give this CD a very solid four stars simply because of my personal love of Placebo, At the Drive-In and The Mars Volta.
