I'm back from the beach!!!
This week was an incredible lesson in the goodness of people and the beauty of nature.
the plan:
to set out for the marari beach, a lost beach that my friend josh found on the internet with supposedly only one hotel; pitch a tent; live on the beach for the week
what happened:
we found the lost beach, and like all the promises, it was gorgeous beyond belief. we confused our rickshaw driver by having him drop us off directly on the beach (you don't want to go to the hotel???) and started looking for a nice deserted place to set up our tent. after an hour of walking we came to realize that people live in the village reguardless of the fact that there are no tourists and therefore there is no stretch of deserted beach, only small spaces between the awesome fishing boats. we gave up and settled for one of those space and started scouting out the best place for our tent. we were quickly greeted by a group of local village boys a little younger in age than us who took us to meet the landowner of the place we wanted to pitch our tent, we listened to the couple talk about their son in the phillipenes who is giong to missionary school and will return a priest, they handed us mango drinks and sent us off to pitch our tent. the boys wanted to go for a swim before the sun set, so they jumped in and i took a walk just a little ways off and watched the sun behind the dark clouds in the distance. suddenly the storm wasn't in the distance but on the beach with a stinging wind and harsh rains. we all ran into the tent where the local boys told us they had a place for us to stay for the night in a friend's house who was out of town. that night we slept there and cooked on the floor with our gas stove and attended a procession for the virgin mary. i've never seen any procession like it, and in many ways it reminded me of the hindu celebrations we had attended back in pune, with flashing lights, techno music, and the brightest shades of neon decorating the statue of mary.
the next day the villagers helped us find someone willing to rent us a house for the week. being the first foreigners to come and live in the village, everyone was eager to help us and came to watch us move our things and sweep out the house. the rest of the week was spent in the house where we learned just how generous people could be as the whole village made sure we had everything we needed. more stories to come about the grand adventures at teh beach and how jess found us (hooray for roommates!)
in the meantime check out my rad pictures now found on shutterfly!
love!
