Athla turns 2 years old today :>

3 years ago, I moved to Colorado. About six months in, I started working at a Wild Animal Sanctuary (I know, right? Who does this) where they had huge dogs roaming around. I liked dogs, but I'd never had one.

Two of the large dogs were Raleigh and Nelly, an Irish Wolfhound and she, a Hungarian Komondor. They became my very good friends.

On the day Nelly became a lady, she and Raleigh got it on like kids at a drive in movie and thus, Athla was born. At this point, I was interested perhaps in taking a puppy (there were seven girls!) and as I spent time with them one little girl became my friend :)

She's only 2 weeks old in that pic!!

At five weeks, we took her home. It was way more work than anticipated, but out of it I got a companion so in tuned to me, willing to protect me from anything, cuddle me when I'm cold and rest her mighty head on my shoulder... I've never known dedication like this before, and as much as I will miss her when she's gone (thinking about it makes me kind of seize up, to be honest), the love she shares with Blake and I is unlike any kind of love I've ever been blessed to receive.

For her Birthday, we took her on a long hike and hiked to the top of the 150 ft hill that overlooks the valley.

We sat (I was kind of not able to breathe from the hike, har har) and watched the little people and little houses in the sunset. She loved it. :)

And THEN, we baked her a birthday cake!!!

She really loved that. It was pretty tastey - Blake and I had some as well! Yay!
