well its the "rock and metal society", and I'd guess the majority of people in it enjoy metal, from what got requested and played last year when they had a DJ night that wasn't in the venue.
i thought the live music society mainly looked after the equipment so that people could use it to put on their own shows rather than us having to have some random people come along and bash out a couple of radiohead covers on a friday night in front of a bunch of mettalers (just for instance). that would make (more) sense.
well I'm not saying that it shouldn't be used to put on whatever music those bands (in the live music soc) want to play, but as the rock n metal society they're pretty much gonna be putting on metal bands, its not up to them to have other styles just because they look after the equipment as well.
and that's because you suck! =P zenithal kick ass.
and there were loads of different bands on the alt-freshers ball in Keynes so it's not like they are -just- getting metal bands in. Martyn has a big list of bands and I'm sure some of them are punky or not as heavy.
We have had a range of bands this term and also to the end of term. Its just unfortanetly that our first update on LJ for while is an update on metal bands which has led to this confusion!
Honestly, I didn't really have a great time in Keynes. I realise I probably sound like grandma, but it was far too loud (to the point that it was difficult to have a conversation *outside*) - and I couldn't distinguish the punk from the metal (I did like some of it, don't get me wrong). (Stewart could, but then he remembers the origins of punk :p) I don't remember any lighter rock being played.
My question was generally this: is it going to be a couple of inaccessibly-heavy-metal bands playing loudly enough to kill off any social interaction - and an evening spent watching half-a-dozen guys headbang. I've not been to any of the other rocksoc events yet this term (only Keynes), and I'm wondering if it's worth my while.
1) That was a common complaint for the All Day event at Keynes and sadly it was nothing we could do about it. For that event, we borrowed the K-bars PA system (as opposed to using our own as before) and it had been 'calibrated' to play optimatly in the K-bar. However, as it turned out (as you mentioned) it ended up being way too loud for the event. Its something we have to watch out for next time.
2) As for your second point - I really hope that its not going to be like that. Martyn is trying to get hold of another lighter band for the evening and also we are going to be very conscious of appealing to as many people as possible. Also, James is one of the DJ's that night so I am sure he can play stuff you will like!
I'm not particularly elitist with my music - and I think everyone knows I'll dance to most things I can find a beat in - but an evening of almost all metal doesn't really appeal (I do that for short periods only at the beercart's monday night :p) So, as there's actually going to be some variety, I'll come up. o/
