Last night I was doing my part for Lana's letter to Whitney.
"Hey Whitney. Hope things are okay out there. I respect you for what your doing. You're doing a good thing. Things have been hectic since the tornados hit last spring. People finally getting their lives back together. New biology teacer...its really sad when that's a highlight. But if you saw her, you'd mention her too."
I caught Lana giggling and glaring at the same time.
"And, uh, well...Pete's taping all the Sharks games for you, so you won't miss a thing. Although the way they're playing, you might want to. (chuckles) Uh...(sighs) Anyway, I haven't forgotten what we talked about, so don't worry. Just, uh, come home soon and be safe."
After she shut off the camera, she asked me what I meant by that. I told her Whitney asked me to watch after her. I quickly explained myself, but ended up changing the subject.
We talked about Whitney and how Lex acted on his passion. The way Lana looked at me after that, it happened. My eyes felt they were on fire, Lana turned to get her keys and i burned the cappuccino machine.
The fire department came and put out the fire. Fire chief thought the fire looked suspicious. So I skipped school.
Dad found me in the barn we had a small talk before he took me out to the fields to teach me to control this new found power.
"Alright. Rule number one. Always practice away from the barn," my dad told me putting a scarecrow in front of me.
I tried to burn the scarecrow and focus, but I couldn't with him next to me. I turned to him and he understood and left.
I thought of the thing that stirred this power the last two times.
"Lana."
WOOSH! Fire came from my eyes. Took a few minutes before I could shut it off. I continued practicing with four more scarecrows, the mailbox, and 2 water barrels, I learned to control it.
Now if I go out, I can take her out without setting anything on fire.
I headed to the Talon later that afternoon. Wanted to make sure Lana was still okay. That fire freaked her out a bit. Freaked me out, because if I had hurt her...I'd never be able to forgive myself.
Ran into Dawn there.
"Hey Dawn."
"Farm boy," Dawn said with a girn. "Feeling better?"
"Yeah," I replied. "Just didn't feel well this morning."
"So, I'm a ever gonna get to see your farm. Never actually seen a working farm before."
"Guess there's no farms in Southern California huh?"
"Not really."
I joined her at her table.
"So what was your old town like," I asked.
"Hell."
I found her choice of words to be rather peculiar.
"My turn for question...what's it like on a farm. Bet you get all sweaty working so much."
"It has its disadvantages, but I have a place to call my own in the barn. It's what I call my 'Fortress of Solitude.' You can see the stars up there perfectly at night."
"He's telling the truth. I've seen it. No lights from town...its a nice place," a voice said from the side.
"Lana," I said. "How are you?"
"I'd ask you the same. Both witness a fire and you get to skip school. Aparrantly my aunt's not as nice as your parents."
"Yeah...well...," I glanced at my watch. "Yikes, I better head home. Chores to do. I'll see you guys at school tomorrow. Dawn maybe if your sister lets you, you can stop by the farm after school tomorrow. Give you a dose of farm life in Smallville."
"Thanks," she said. "I'll ask."
Dawn seems nice. But I know Chloe is looking for something on her and her sister. I have to talk to her. Maybe I'll give her a call tonight. Things haven't been right since we decided to be friends again.
