Zimmerman Getting Off

To repeat what I've said elsewhere: I can accept the acquittal. Maybe the prosecution couldn’t disprove a self-defense claim. I’m not a lawyer and I wasn’t in the jury room ( Read more... )

I mean, he exemplifies the world they think they want. They have been triumphing a world where the individual is responsible for his every success. Also, screw black people and no restrictions on guns ever. Perfect storm of stupid, leading to tragic result, but it was just a poor black kid who paid the price, so they don't care.

It's terrible, but this is the verdict almost guaranteed by the circus that happened before the trial.

You know, if the prosecution pushed manslaughter instead of 2nd degree, I think they could have gotten a conviction. That, and they were really bad at their jobs. Horrendous. I wouldn't have called it a guarantee before trial.

I totally agree. I don't know if you can't instruct a jury to consider a lesser charge, or even present a prosecution in such a way in Florida. But if it was possible and they didn't include that charge? Fire all those prosecutors.

Maybe the prosecution realized the horrendous miscarriage of justice they were being asked to carry out, and didn't try too hard?

I thought the jury asked for clarification on the manslaughter instructions. They knew manslaughter was an option; they just didn't think they could convict on those grounds.

CBS News: (CBS) SANFORD, Fla. - Following nearly three weeks of testimony, a jury of six women in the George Zimmerman trial has found the former neighborhood watch volunteer not guilty of second-degree murder. He was also found not guilty of the lesser offense of manslaughter, which the jury also weighed.

But it wasn't what they prosecution focused on. IMO, the prosecution undermined its credibility by going for murder, but there wasn't a sufficient case for manslaughter in any event.

Yeah, it's not as if Martin could have chosen not to double back and attack Zimmerman for the deep offense of having confronted him, right? I mean, you or I would have just been glad that the night had ended without a fight, but Martin was just a "poor black kid" and thus had no choice?

Has it occurred to you that "poor black kids" have just as much freedom of choice as do you or I, and hence Martin's choice to initiate potentially-lethal violence was just that -- a choice, not a necessity?

Why should Martin not be blamed for trying to kill Zimmerman, but Zimmerman be blamed for successfully defending himself against this attempt?
