*groan* This has been building for months. If you don't want to read ANOTHER rant, just skip this and move on down.
I hear the word "progressive" being applied nowadays with little to no signs of any actual PROGRESS. Much of it surrounds the current presidential election. Rather than building a case up bit-by-bit, I'll just go ahead and make the killer statement and THEN go off on a tear.
We're being "progressive" now because of how, for the first time ever, we have both a woman and a minority member in the race for the office of the President of the United States of America. What an amazing turn this is! Right? Isn't it? *cue crickets* Yeah, that's what I thought. This isn't progress, its a foray at best. Want to know why? Its actually very simple. Its the reason why those minority / special interest group jack-offs don't want equality, they want control, they want speciality, etc. If we were truly being progressive, then there'd be a different story surrounding the presidential elections including women and minorities.
IT WOULDN'T FUCKING MATTER!!!
THAT is the definition of progress in this context. I'm sick to the TEETH of stories about this little bitch-fight going on between Clinton and Obama with their respective camps. When you break it all down, there are people who will vote for Hillary Clinton simply because she's a woman, and there are those who will vote for Barack Obama simply because he's black. THEY'RE BOTH WRONG! Whether the fact that Clinton and Obama are a woman and a black man, respectively, causes you to either vote or NOT vote for them, that's not progressive. If the definition of "progress" in the Presidential race is the inclusion of a woman and a black man, then I suppose that the definition of "progressing" towards eating healthier is bringing along a sprig of celery when I go get a super-size Big Mac combo at MacDonald's for lunch.
It's the same kind of sexism and racism we've been dealing with for generations. So, on behalf of my entire generation and the generations that will follow me, I issue this inexorable statement to those who came before us: THIS IS NOT OUR MISTAKE. STOP MAKING US PAY FOR IT.
Here is the definition of progress: a movement toward a goal or to a further or higher stage; advancement in general; growth or development; continuous improvement
If ANY of these things were so, then it simply wouldn't MATTER whether we had a woman and a black man.. and a Native American.. and a Hispanic female.. and a third-generation Japanese-American... and whoever else in the run for the White House. All of these people would then be judged on the simple merit of there character and wisdom concerning the state of our nation and the world at large, rather than any state of their appearance, skin coloring, place of birth ("ain't ye heard? all us derned sutherners are a bunch 'a fuckin' morons!"), or - God forbid - gender.
Dr. King's dream has been corrupted. Certainly not beyond recovery, but sufficient that we need to pull a hard-180 in order to get back on track. He wasn't talking about social equality for just African-Americans, he was talking about it for EVERYONE, including: Caucasians, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, single mothers, widowers with three kids, multi-billionaires, high-school drop-outs, old war veterans, and the baby born four seconds ago.
What's my point? Well, I guess I am reaching away from the topic a bit in order to say what I really want to say. I suppose that, in itself, is another problem: people latching on to distantly-related topics in order to express disatisfaction or just to rant about something. *sigh* I'm just so sick of it. And I'm sick of this whole situation where, although we are supposed to have "equality" in our day and age, I'M the one who is required by society to tread softly because I'm a middle-class, white male. Oh yeah, that's equality for you right there.
This needs to be fixed, and quickly. And, for the love of God, I can't really see how to do it. I'm just tired, I suppose.
