Had an interesting discussion with my David Tennant-looking friend the other night. (I'm going to enjoy people trying to figure out who the hell I'm talking about.)
Nihilism.
We've all got it. That self-destructive little impulse in the backs of our heads. Some people run from it, shroud themselves in work, responsibility, studiousness, money, fame, whatever. Others latch onto it like it is the only truth in the universe, like these people who say that the only time they feel alive is when they're jumping off a bridge with a strip of elastic tied to their ankles.
In short, people have some serious frakking problems.
Anyway, during the course of this discussion, we both came to a realization that we both subconsciously understood yet neither had ever thought to (or how to) put in words.
There's something going on at a subconscious level in all of us that may end up saving what's left of this scrap-ball world. We understand that something is wrong, very wrong, and we're trying to destroy it.
People talk about creation and destruction as being diametric opposites, aligned with words like "good" and "evil". The truth is that they are neither. You can destroy something wonderful and in its place create something horrible. Also, they are not opposites, but are in fact one in the same. Whenever you destroy something, you are creating something else. Usually what you are creating is chaos or entropy, but it is being created nonetheless. Quite often, this is what has been happening.
And looking between chaos or entropy, it is amazing to think that entropy is much, much worse.
We all know, we all understand that this is what happening, and we're also trying to stop it. But, in stopping it, in trying to destroy it, we're just creating more.
I've always enjoyed these conversations, since he and I are sometimes diametric opposites. I've always thought of myself as a "middle of the road" kinda guy, but will always lean more to the conservative side. He, too, fashions himself a "middle of the road" individual, but will always lean more to the liberal side. Nothing wrong with either of us. Its actually kinda fun, since we are able to lean on opposite sides of the fence and carry on these conversations.
Perhaps we're destroying some of the entropy, and creating something else. A new order? Possibly. A new chaos? Most likely. Either way, its better than what we've got going on now.
