Dateline: Georgia (hehehe)
A 22-year-old steals gas one evening. Gases up his car and takes off. He is caught. His punishment?
He has to march the small patch of grass outside the gas station he robbed (that's right, if you steal gas, you just robbed a gas station, natch) carrying his own "scarlet letter":
A 2'x3' neon pink sign that says,
"I STOLE GAS AND THIS IS MY PUNISHMENT"
He has to do this ALL DAY LONG. He has to pace around outside the station, in the bitter nigh-winter cold, carrying his sign in full view, letting motorists honk their horns at him in displeasure of his crime.
Ladies and gentlemen, the system works.
