Hard to convey with pictures like this the impact of the 2004 tsunami on PhiPhi Island.
That flat area on the other side of the bridge ... well, there was a village there. The pool was recessed with no major structures, easily dug back out and the rest of the resort was on higher ground.
A few years later, 2011 march:
A street in a small village on Koh Phangnon. I was stuck here for two weeks, as all the roads were washed out. The bright side: the food held out and it was excellent.
On the way to the Surat Thani Airport. Had to hustle up a military transport, all the civilian trucks were getting stuck in the 10 km wide, 1 meter deep river that separated Surat from the Airport.
So now I am in Hawaii, where we are safe from disaster, here in my House on the slopes of Mauna Loa. I would show you a Pic, but the iPad version of Livejournal doesn't seem to work very well.
