Thanxmate Day

Thanxmate Day, is an ethno-cultural transmogrification of a Canadian Festival called Thanksgiving Day -- Jour de l'Action de grâce, The origins of the festival trace back to the 1578 voyage of Martin Frobisher, who was so happy to have survived the artic that he overflowed with gratitude.  In Acadia, the origins harken back to Samuel de Champlain, in 1604, and the L'Ordre de Bon Temps.  This should be remembered for the sagamore Membertou, and other chiefs, who were treated as guests and equals at the fete.  There is no record of turkey being on the menu or if Membertou mentioned to the Europeans how to avoid the scurvy that fell many of them.  Thanxmate Day is also celebrated on Norfolk Island where it is known as Thanksgiving, but as that follows from the American tradition, Canadians there celebrate three weeks earlier and get the pick of the limited number of turkeys.
