Communication interruption

Dec 02, 2006 13:01

In case you were wondering why you haven't seen posts
or comments from me recently (not that you were), my
laptop was in the shop for a week having its hard
drive replaced.

Stupid me, I only replaced my 60G drive with 100G, so
with my music I still only have 1.5G left, which is
way outside the recommended 10-15% free. Sigh, can
you say "false economy"? :-/

All things considered, it could have been much worse; I
noticed a noise and backed up a month or so ago, so it
only cost me a few weeks of email, some unspecified
data, $160 dollars for a new disk drive, $150 for an
hour and a half of labor at We Fix Macs, 12 or so hours
of my time in unsuccessful, then successful, attempts
at data restoration, and some random amount of time in
dealing with unfamiliar systems while my beloved
PowerBook G4 was gone.

In any case, all my email from November 30 to December
21 is gone bye-bye. If you sent me anything important
in that time, please resend.

The takeaway message -- BACK UP EARLY AND OFTEN!

We Fix Macs tried and failed to restore the disk, but
determined that it had a mechanical problem. I _might_
be able to recover the lost data by sending the drive
to a data recovery center where they'd disassemble
the drive and put the platters in another drive (big
bucks for what might be nothing if the heads of the
previous drive actually scraped data off the surface).
Not worth it for two weeks' worth of data -- at least I
don't think so. At least I hope not. I'm betting
there were no "last chance to pay before this goes to
collections" or "last chance to claim large sum of
money" emails in there.
